Anna University, Chennai -An Overview

In the course of next few days I shall be talking about various & well established universities on my blog. Each state has its own university like we have one in Mumbai.Today I shall be talking about The Anna University In Chennai based in Tamil Nadu in India. It is one of the most famous & old universities out there.
About the college:
Anna University was established on 4th September 1978 as a unitary type of University. It offers higher education in Engineering, Technology and allied Sciences relevant to the current and projected needs of the society.Besides promoting research and disseminating knowledge gained therefrom, it fosters cooperation between the academic and industrial communities.The University was formed by bringing together and integrating two well-known technical institutions in the city of Madras.
College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG)(1794)
Madras Institute of Technology , Chrompet (MIT)(1949) and three Technological Departments of the University of Madras.
Alagappa College of Technology (ACT)(1944)
School of Architecture and Planning (SAP)(1957)
Situated in the southern part of the city of Madras (Chennai), the University's main campus extends over 100 hectares abutting the Adyar River on the north and Raj Bhavan on the south. The Madras Institute of Technology at Chrompet constitutes the second campus of the University which extends over 20 hectares. Both the campuses have a variety of buildings serving the various needs of the University community. A third campus extending over 80 hectares is located at Taramani near the Instronic campus, Adyar. The Bioprocess Laboratory donated by SPIC is located at present in this campus and a few more centers of advanced studies, like National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Sugar Research Institute, Mechatronics Institute, Entreprenuership Development Park, and Convention Centre will also be housed there in future.
Since December 2001,it has become a large, highly renowned Affiliated University, having brought into its fold about 426 Self-financing Engineering Colleges six Government Colleges and three Government-aided Engineering colleges located in various parts of Tamilnadu State.
The Anna University ,which is of the affiliated type is a member of the Association of Indian Universities, the Association of Commonwealth Universities and Partner of UNESCO International Center for Engineering Education (UICEE). UGC have accredited Anna University with Five Star Status in 2002 which is the highest rating. With proven capabilities both in academic and research areas, Anna University was able to receive this honour for a period of five years for excellence in Technical Education.
Prof .D P Kaliraj is the Director of this University which was started in the year 1978. That is a long time, isn't it? They have a faculty of 479 people and the Faculty Student ratio is 1: 4.1.
Their main motto is Progress through knowledge.
The Reservation of seats are as follows:
- General - 44%
- OBC (Other Backward Caste) - 29%
- SC (Scheduled Caste) - 7%
- ST( Scheduled Tribe) - 7%
- Handicapped - 2%
- Management - %
They do have a variety of courses which are as follows:
1. Arts- On Campus - Full Time - 2 years
2. Engineering - a) B. Tech in which they have 29 courses
b) M. Tech in which they have 64 courses
3. Science- B.Sc (1) M.Sc (9) and Others (1)
4. Mass Communication - MMC (1)
5. Architecture: B. Arch (2) M.Arch (3)
The Fees are dependent on the course you choose & also the eligibility criteria. The Anna University Results & rankings are very good being established for so long.
The University offers Distance Education courses. It has a University Library too.The University Library, which has been established in the year 1978 gained autonomy from December 2000. It is housed in a three storeyed new Building located at the eastern side in the main campus. The total area of the Library building is about 4122 sq.m. 30 video cameras are placed at strategic points in the library for surveillance. The MIT campus also has a library of area 1256 sq.m. Around 10,157 registered uses are in access of the library. Many knowledge-based services like that of Reference, Bibliography, MALIBNET service., DELNET, Reprography, CD-ROM Databases, Internet browsing and e-services are provided by the library for its users.
In conclusion I would say that Anna University in Chennai is a well established and old university offering a wide variety of courses, amazing faculty & state of the art infrastructure. One can definitely go for the courses offered here and apply for the various courses they offer. This is more beneficial not only to those living in the South but to students across India who are ready to relocate.
